Hello

I just bought a used Nikon F-401s (sold as the N4004s in the US).

After i got it i wanted to test the shutter so I opened the back and pressed the shutter.

As you can see in the video when you do that without film the camera tries to load film.

You can also see that the mirror flipped back but the shutter didn't open.

Is the shutter supposed to open when loading film or not?

I would rather not shoot a roll of film and waste it since I don't know if the camera is working or not so that is why i'm asking here.

Don’t know if this helps…

You might as well put a roll of film through it, you’ve bought it now!

Back in the day, I used to keep a roll of film just for testing film advance, rewind, etc. Just wind it back into the cassette carefully (or get out the film leader retriever if I wound it too far) and put it somewhere it wouldn’t get mixed up with my other film for next time.
