I am highly interested in this lens, provided it is 'relatively' affordable

Do you consider $6,000.00 "'relatively' affordable"? :P

Nikon Nikkor Z 800mm f/6.3 VR PF S lens updates (price: k, weight: 2.3 kg!) - Nikon Rumors

Compared to the FX AF-S NIKKOR 800mm f/5.6E FL ED VR at $16,299.95, I guess one could make that case.

AF-S NIKKOR 800mm f/5.6E FL ED VR

Personally it is!  I hope the rumour pans out, but hopefully Peter, on NR, vetted the Chinese info. If this price is true, demand and more might just stretch the Z9 waiting lists to be even longer....

To paraphase one of the flood of comments I flagged on this NR post: One can mix one's F mount system (eg 300 f4 PF and/or 500 f5.6 PF) via the FTZ with this 800 PF. And there are many more options... 180-400 TC14  or 120-300 f2.8E (with TC14). Option to use the F lenses on the excellent DSLRs of course. There's the 400 PF coming and already the superb 100-400 S

Only a few months back, Nikon was dying, apparently?!

Game Changer - 800 Preview by Tom Mason and by Steve Perry. Steve's synopsis on his Backcountry Gallery website :

Steve Perry's summary on his BCG forum "We only had the lens for one rainy afternoon and then a couple hours the next morning. The Nikon rep had to be with us, but was careful not to try and dictate anything. He was just there to watch the lens. I was in charge of where we went, what we shot, etc. Very unrestrictive and in my final "first look" review I can give my honest opinion (or I wouldn't have done it). Overall, I can say I really do like the lens and I am planning on getting one. It's a game-changer."

For me personally the highly rated Z400mm w/ teleconverters will save a bundle of money and add versatility.
