D500 update not working

I wish to use my D500 as a webcam and was under the impression I needed to update its firmware before I can do this,  The current firmware version is 1.00 and I have downloaded the latest 1.20 firmware dated 23.4.19.  As per the instructions I have put the bin file into the root directory of a formatted SD card (or at least I think I've put it in the correct location!)   When I put the SD card into the camera and access the firmware version screen, there is no option to update.    I am wondering what is going wrong ?  I attach a file showing the location of the bin file on my desktop.

Have you formatted the card in your camera? The volume name should be NIKON D500 if that is the case. In the root directory, you should see a folder called DCIM and nothing else before you copy the .bin file there.

 

Your screenshot looks like you have copied the .bin file to the level above the D500Update folder on your computer instead of the root of the card.

Also pay attention for removing the XQD card (if there is one) so the SD card is the only one in the slots.

I think with double memory slot card camera systems, the boot process looks at the root directory of the primary slot (and the XQD slot is before the SD slot) and - if that is empty (i.e. no card)- only the seconday slot

Considering the above, you may also copy the file to the root directory of the XQD card (if any)

I have to make an apology- my camera is the D5000 , not the D500 and according to NIkon is not currently compatible with their webcam software, although that may change. For now and with the help of Nikon Support, who were excellent, I have successfully updated the D5000's firmware.
