I recently came into possession of a Nikon FA and noticed something slightly odd. When looking through the finder, the little screen on the upper-left that displays exposure isn't backlit at all, meaning that it's impossible to see you meter reading when shooting at night. During the day it's fine because light shines through the semi-clear plastic piece on the front of the finder. Has anyone experienced this same issue?

Seems so odd that a camera from the 80's wouldn't have feature to light up the screen inside the finder to see the exposure reading at night...

There is no artificial LCD backlight in the FA. It was Nikon's second attempt at using a LCD in the finder. The F3 has a tiny button that can momentarily start the illumination if the stars are aligned and your timing is right. With the FA, you can use a small LED light and shine it on the illumination window when you need to see the information at night. The reason for these strange solutions is that they wanted to keep using the small batteries of the previous generation, so they had to design things for a very low current draw.
