I currently have a Nikon D5300 with the 18-55 vrii kit lens, and was originally considering upgrading to the Nikon 18-300mm VR. I've recently been recommended the Nikon AF-P  DX 70-300 since it apparently is quite a lot better in quality and a lot cheaper than the 18-300.

How does the Nikon 70-300 AF-P DX VR compare with the Tamron 70-300 VC?

Also I read that i'll have to go into the menu if I want to switch off the VR for the AF-P, will I also have to go into the menu to switch from AUTO to MANUAL focus?

Out of the two lenses the Nikon AF-P lens gets the better reviews than the Tamron.

However the Tamron has the switches to activate VC and AF/MF, which the AF-P DX does not (i.e. indeed you need to do all through the menus (the AF-P FX version, on the other side, has the switches, so pay attention when comparing)).
