D5100 Multi selector Up button not always working

This seems to have occurred after a soda spill on my D5100. Everything else seems to be working normally.

 

The 'Up' button on my multi selector is not always working: in menus I cannot move up to an item I have moved past; when I am viewing an image "full screen" the 'Up' button does not display the image info.

 

However, if I view an image and zoom in, the up arrow moves me up the zoomed image, as expected. Similarly if I am in 'Live View' the up arrow will move the focus selection.

 

I have reset the Shooting and Playback menus.

 

Any suggestions would be gratefully received!

If this is a new issue since spilling the soda it may need to be looked at by a pro.  Some of the soda my have damaged the circuitry for that button. I would think just a simple splash wouldn't have affected it like that but Murphy works in mysterious ways.

And, it can get worse over time as the bits of soda that got inside corrode the electronics inside.  A trip to the shop seems like the best if not only choice...

I find it difficult to believe there is more than one contact in the up button, so that says to me that this is a more serious issue than a ruined button.

The D5100 being an older model you may find that the cost for a cost estimation - not to say the fix - might be more important than buying a second hand D5100 camera in working condition.

If this proves correct - and only then and if acceptable to you - I would try to give the camera a second spill on the same place with a de-oxydant for electronics. I am not saying it will help, but might do so.

Certainly worth a try... but the fact that button works in some modes and not others suggest a logic issue.

If the soda contained sugar you need to use water to get rid of it. Apolar solvents doesn't dissolve sugar unfortunately. Use water as a last resort.
