I've been using a d7200 now for about three years. It does very well for my needs. I am, however, ready to upgrade. BUT, what I want is a genuine upgrade. That is to say, a new camera that gives me more than what I currently have and without giving up any of what I currently have. I know the d7500 has some better features but it undermines that with lower pixel resolution. Better resolution that the d7200 would be the most attractive upgrade, to me, but not at the cost of having to invest in all new lenses. I don't suppose anyone from Nikon is listening?

24 MP on DX is close to the limit for lots of lenses, anything higher would become diffraction-limited before hitting the optimal aperture for maximum contrast and sharpness. The flagship DX camera (D500) has acknowledged that with a 20 MP sensor that has enough pixel quality that you can actually make larger prints than from the D7200. The same sensor, but with a slower processor and smaller buffer is in the D7500.

I agree...the only DX-level upgrade would be the D500 at this time. I have one along with my D4 and it is quite capable. Other than the D500, you would want to look at FX bodies as your upgrade path. If you have mostly or entirely DX lenses, you will want to consider the cost of replacing them to get your best functionality out of an FX body.

you got choices could go D500 for crop body. other choice is d750 or d810 or d850 or Z series body's also since do not know how many full frame lenses you have or your budget. we can only give what i said and other said.

Yes, I can read the catalog too. I just do not see any of those options as an upgrade, for my needs.

What do you shoot where you need more than 24 MP from a DX sensor? The MP race has been stupid since about 2007 as 10-12 MP is enough to print mural-sized.
The D500 produces significantly cleaner files than the D7200, making larger prints possible even if the resolution is lower.
The D7500 is dumbed-down to be a modern equivalent to the D90, now that the D7xxx series is no longer the flagship DX body.
The D500/D7500 sensor actually has a smaller pixel pitch than the D850.
Remember that a sensor resolution that is higher than the optical resolution will make for less perceived sharpness, not more, as empty resolution will make contours fuzzy.

I guess I don't understand your question then. You want to upgrade and don't feel that the D500 is an upgrade that will work for you. What is your issue with your D7200 that causes your need to upgrade? The D500 meets the requirements you set in your post above.

If you want a real upgrade and want to stay in the DX camp, in my opinion, the D500 is the way to go. That said, most of us will never be able to produce images anywhere near the capability of our equipment. No matter how modest that equipment may be.

if not sure what camera will be great upgrade for you. why not rent then out or test them out in camera store. you find what will fit your needs. also fact do not need D7500 since D500 way better upgrade.

My decisoin is that there is no replacement for the d7200 that I consider an upgrade relevant to my needs. Therefore I will stay with the d7200. In the event it fails I will get another d7200.
