I can’t figure out why my D810 on camera flash is so slow to recycle? At first I thought it was my SB 900 that was connected, but that is recycling immediately. I’ve narrowed it down to on camera flash which can take up to six seconds before it’s ready to take the next shot. Very frustrating when doing HDR series of three. I’ve spent way too many hours and get sucked down other rabbit holes trying to find out Via online searches. My camera settings were aperture F11, bracketing 3 @ 1 step.

Do you really want the pop-up flash to contribute any light? I tend to only use it as a master with no lighting output (the -- setting) if I use AWL. Using a radio link of some kind works much better than CLS/AWL anyway. The pop-up flash is weak and there is no room for a large capacitor in the camera. Many small caps lead to more resistance, which is why they take longer to recycle. They might even have had to choke the recycle to avoid heating problems.

Yeah, what Peter said. If you absolutely need an on camera flash, I would buy a small add on and forget the popup. But dispensing with optical triggers is the way to go.
