Sometime before midnight (whatever time zone you are in) this Sunday, 12 August 2018, post the best photo you have taken this week. Any subject, any style—just give us your best shot.

If you can, list your EXIF info and any special lighting setups you may have used.

I made gazpacho this morning to eat for dinner. Here is a close-up of the seeds. The knife is sharp when you slice a cucumber seed while deseeding.

Pretty neat shot, Peter! I'm trying to figure out how the bottom edge is working--it looks like the cucumber is dissolving into nothingness... But yes, that must have been a very sharp knife!

Ah--I think I get it. You removed the center part, hence the mention of deseeding. Got it!

It is a triangular section of the center part, placed on a dark red plate. The vivid Picture Control gives the dissolving effect at the edge.

I've noticed you're using the vivid picture control feature lately--what exactly is it doing for you? I'm curious to know what effect it has. I remember you used it on your midday harsh light set, and that turned out fantastic.

The higher saturation and brightness combined with slightly lower contrast does work like slightly overexposed Velvia or Ektachrome VS did in the analog days. It is also as close to the D2X Mode3 Picture control that has been my go-to on the D300 and D700 as the D7200 can get without creating a custom Picture Control. In this case, I didn't have to tweak the curves at all in post, so this is SOOC.

The camera club I'm in went on a Milky Way outing last night.  This was my first time attempting to capture it.  I got a few that I like, but focus was definitely the most difficult aspect.  It's very hard to tell through the viewfinder if the stars are going to be sharp in the photo.

Way to go, Mark!!! That's a fantastic shot! Yes, focusing in the dark definitely has its challenges. I'm assuming they gave you some pointers on how to do it. I usually find a bright star (or something else very far away if I'm adding light) to focus on and zoom in on live view. I've also marked my lenses--focus to infinity beforehand and mark where that actually falls (it would be nice if you could count on the infinity mark). Anyway, hope we'll see more of these from you. I'll be doing some this weekend--trying again to shoot the Perseids.

I'm glad the club scheduled this for Thursday night. Forecast here is overcast and rainy all weekend. Shenandoah National Park is hosting a "night sky festival" tomorrow through Sunday night but I'm afraid they won't see much. I'll be watching for another clear night for more practice but this time without the group and farther from the road. There were too many flashlights and car lights.

I have been silent all summer.  We finally got a break from the constant 100+ temps when the rains moved in.  A positive outcome from the rain storms is certain cactus bloom out of season.  This photo is a fish hook cactus that bloomed two days after one our our desert storms.

Good to see you, deano--glad you've had a bit of respite from brutal temperatures! I'm hoping someday to do some storm photography down in your Arizona monsoons. No idea when I'll get around to it, but it's on my bucket list. :) That's a beautiful cactus bloom. Wonderful detail there--the petals look so delicate and translucent. How fortunate you were to capture it! I've gotta say--as much as I would hate dealing with the heat down there, I do love Arizona plant life.

Heh...I know exactly what you mean. I never shoot with anyone else when I'm doing night sky photos for that very reason.

Running late as usual...had a very interesting assignment on the 11th.  Those who have been around for awhile might recall some photos of a Rugby 7s Tournament I did last month.  That was a pretty serious competition that included 30 high school, women's and men's teams.  They hired me for another tournament, this time a less serious competition - teams played just as hard, but the rules were somewhat relaxed.  The field was smaller and I didn't even see a scrum all day.  Both women and men had teams there.  When players were tired, often players for other teams would step in to help out (which made it quite confusing for the photographer).  And one organization had two mens teams there, so when they played each other, it was shirts vs. skins.  Oh yea...it all happened on a beach...

Yes, that is the Atlantic Ocean you see in the background.  We were in Atlantic Beach, North Carolina.  While they did take their playing seriously, it was mostly a fun day for the teams.  For me, These were all shot with my D500 and 70-200 lens -  most at f4, 1/5000, ISO 200....
