The Picture control utility is used to generate different looks for the photos. These profiles are used either in the camera for jpegs or on Capture NX-D when developing the raw file.
ViewNX-i is an advanced file browser with limited manipulation tools.
Capture NX-D is the processing software.
When you imported the files with Transfer, what was your target folder? This is where you will find the files again.
To export the finished photo press Ctrl+e to convert to tiff or jpeg and save the result.

OK thanks. Thing is, I don't remember anything about a target folder. I simply used 'Nikon Transfer 2' and then started to work on Capture NX-D once the photos were transferred. I accidently clicked on my 'Pictures' folder on my PC (see second screenshot) and now I can't get back to where I was. How do I get my photos back so that I can get to work on them ?

Do you find anything if you click the Recent Transfer favorite folder?
You can probably open Transfer and check the settings and find out where you have saved them that way.
You should be able to search for *.nef or *.jpg in Explorer and find out he path that way, but I am not sure how things work and look in the Microsoft world .

Found the photos I'm looking for. Thank you very much.
But now (sorry about this) I would like to see what the photos look like before and after alteration but when I move any of the cursors back and forth nothing happens. The 'After' photo just stays the same. Also, when I move the cursor the 'Manual' changes to 'Recorded Settings' for some reason. Also, it seems to Save altered images without me actually saving the image. I now have 9 images of the same photo (with various tweaks) despite me not saving the image.

But now I can't seem to alter the photos. When I try to use the features nothing happens. I click on 'White Balance' or 'Exposure Compensation' for example but the sliders are locked, can't use them. Why ?

Jpegs only have limited settings available, even SOOC. Files that are converted to jpg are even more limited in what Capture can do with them. To get the full advantage of Capture NX-D, it needs raw files to work on.

OK thanks again. In the top right hand corner under 'Edit' (see screenshot) I see 'Manual' at the top and 'Manual' at the bottom. How do I get all of the options to say 'Manual' ?
Would I be right in saying then that if I've taken my photos in Jpeg mode as opposed to Raw mode then that is the reason I can't get anything to work ?

I suspect that you are right. If you try to shoot a frame or two in raw and import them, does the options light up?
The pull-downs in the Edit pane change to reflect what has been done to the photo. If you change things with the sliders, they read manual, if you select one of the presets, that is what will show.
