The new 18-55mm VRII lens from Nikon is significantly smaller and lighter than its predecessor. It was launched alongside the D3300 entry-level DSLRs but it is also available separately.

It's a plastic kit lens that probably won't stand much hard use and little abuse, however the output is amazing! Mine came with my D5500 and it usually stays on the camera because it's that good. It's a perfect mate to Nikon's compact D3000/D5000 series cameras.
I have one on my D5000 and it works very well.
