Hi guys, next week I'm taking a course on night photography and obviously need a tripod. I've got a cheap and nasty half broken tripod already, so looking at a new purchase. Can anyone recommend a tripod that won't cost me an arm and a leg...I've got a D3200 with a a battery grip. Thanks :-)

I have a SLIK and love it. It's a piece of equipment you buy and keep for years. Sorry I don't remember the model, but they make several good ones. It's the kind that's better than 6 foot tall, but folds up to 1 foot. It straps to my camera bag and is very portable. Also very rugged. Fluid motion in the X, Y and Z axis. I have a quick disconnect head that I keep attached to my D7100 all the time.

Take a look at a Manfrotto 190 and a Cullmann or Sirui ballhead. They are not flashy, nor are they flimsy or especially light but they are dependable. If that is too expensive, a Vanguard or a SLIK at the lower price range are usable, even if not as unbreakable as a set of 190 legs... The series 55 legs are nice too, but the aluminium ones are heavy and the carbon is expensive.

I quite like my old Gitzo legs, but the eqivalent of the old Reporter I have is the series 3 and they cost quite a bit.

Induro makes a nice sturdy, inexpensive tripod with a ballhead.  At somepoint you will want to buy a different ballhead but the legs are quite nice for the price.
