I paid $1049.00 USD for mine last August from B&H.  They only lowered their price a drop to $996.00.  At the time, I could have gotten the camera for $950.00 or so from other vendors, but the confidence in B&H was worth the difference.  Now, some vendors, as well as Ebay sellers are down to as low as $799.99 USD, such as this one - https://www.ebay.com/itm/204066537303.

Why the big price drop?

It's quite normal, don't worry and don't be panic.

Nikon Coolpix P1000 it's 2018 camera and the price always around $999, I think that with new tendency to buy the mirrorless cameras and no more bridge Coolpix series cameras from Nikon are quite normal start lowing prices until out of stock. Around 25% - 35% usually.

Happens with all discontinued cameras until no more selling in stores.

Probably 2023 would be the year of a lot of cameras be discontinued, of course all the cameras from 2017 and 2018 for sure.

If you want a new P1000 as backup camera buy and don't open it, take the best price opportunity you can, usually old new stuff later is more expensive.

Ty - I'm not spending that much money on a backup.  My B600 is a good enough backup.

But just in case, be in mind, it's possible to see a bargain price at the end of stocks.

I was also curious whether something was coming out with more focal length, and maybe vendors had this inside knowledge and were therefore doing what they can to get rid of their P1000 existing stock to prepare for sales of the new monster zoom.

I doubt something better is coming.

Because of that, I think is your last chance to collect any backup camera for future, The technical support would be 10 years more than the discontinued series is confirmed.

I think that Nikon drop the Coolpix Series and the Bridge cameras as well, and it's not the only series will drop.

The DSLR would happen the same future as SLR for sure.

All the efforts and bet of Nikon are in the mirrorless Z series, all the rumors are almost confirmed the close future is the Z series and no more projects.

Too many evidences and no projects in other areas confirm this rumor, it's turning reality.

Something is definitely going on.  I see targeted ads for the P1000 every day of my life, and they are getting cheaper and cheaper.  Abe's of Maine is now down to $769.00:
