When considering buying a used Nikon D800e from a reputable source I find myself struggling with the following question. The camera in question is tagged as excellent but with a shutter count of 115,000. In contention is also a Nikon D610 for less money but tagged as like new and a much lower shutter count. I want the camera for portraits, copying film and macro work. Any thoughts really welcome.

Hello Charles.

I too would think twice about buying a D800E with a 115,000 shutter count.

I bought one with 33,000 clicks a year ago. It's now at 43,000 - still plenty life!

I'm very pleased with mine.

Unless it's very cheap - with a warranty from a dealer, I think I would keep looking.

I can't make any useful comments about the D610, as I've never owned one.

Two questions...

Do you need 36 MP or is 24 enough for your use for the camera?

Do you intend to shoot things where you need dynamic range or high ISO? The D800 has a greater DR, but the grain-like pattern to the noise from the D610 sensor is much less offensive in low light. The strengths of the cameras you are comparing are diametrically opposed.

If the price its right, I wouldn't be *that* wary of 115000 clicks on any D8x0 body.

One other consideration is that you want the camera for portraits. There is a risk of moiré with some lenses in textiles with the lack of a low-pass filter in the D800E. Some lenses, like the DC short teles don't have these problems as the rear element acts as a weak low-pass filter.

Much to ponder there. Thank you for your thoughts. Impressive knowledge.

I use a D610 for both macro photography and slide/film copying and find it to be excellent. I'm sure that the D800E would show greater detail... especially in macro, but sometimes that can be a problem with both portraits and slide copying.

As my friends have said, if the price is right... maybe it's worth taking a chance with the D800E shutter count. You would certainly be getting a more professional body than you would with the D610. But otherwise, I think you'd find that the D610 to be perfectly adequate.

Finally bought a D610 but the battery wouldn’t hold its charge so returned it and received a refund. Took a deep breath and bought a Z5 instead. Now just need the lenses. Thanks again for all the replies.

Going forward, any Z camera (with the exception of the Z-30) is probably the best option. And, I've heard really good things about the Z5. Also, if you already have a cache of recent Nikon lenses, either of the FTZ converters should allow you to use them while you build your Z lens collection.
