I bought the d3500 kit that came with the 70-300mm lens. I really want a lens with an image stabilizer and autofocus but don’t want to spend a huge amount of money. I’m mostly shooting birds outdoors so I need something big but not too heavy. Don’t want to use tripods or monopod. Any advice for the lens upgrade?

I have a sigma 120-400, that I bought second hand pretty cheap. It has image stabilisation and autofocus, it is low cost but it is heavy.

sigma 120-400mm f/4.5-5.6 - Google Search

I have found it to be a brilliant lens on my D3300. I suspect that you will be hard pushed to get all of the requirements met. Examples from my camera on this lens:

If you don't need *that* much extra reach, a 100-400 from either Tamron or Sigma might work. If you need more, either the Sigma 150-600 Contemporary or the Tamron 150-600 G2 offer tremendous value for money. They can all be flashed with new firmware and the AF can be fine-tuned by the owner using a cheapish gadget if necessary.

As there is no AF fine-tune in the D3500, the Nikon 200-500 or the first-gen. Tamron are not as suitable for this body.

All four lenses can usually be found used if money is tight.
