What I've seen, besides the obligatory promotional stuff from Nikon and a few hands-on reviews, are articles by people who are saying these cameras already suck. Is it about clickbait? "Oh, it's just a mirroless 850/5D Mark IV!" Uh, what did you expect?

It's only got ONE card slot!!!! OMG, How many years did we shoot with one card slot???

These companies are just entering the mirrorless waters seriously. And we've only seen one of Canon's proposed cameras. Give it a little time. Honestly, I wouldn't buy the first round of mirrorless cameras from them because I'm sure there will be some bugs and growing pains. But, it doesn't mean they're terrible https://mobdro.bio/ https://kodi.bio/.

Yeah, the specs are similar to the DSLRs that already exist. Were those terrible cameras? This is what you might think of as a bridge between DSLRs and Mirrorless for these companies. Yea, you can still use all your old lenses. Yea, the specs are pretty much the same.

Everybody jumping to hate on them before they've been seriously tested in the field is kind of missing the point of what they're for...

I don’t blame them! These people shoot Nikon for decades and spent so much money on lenses
I totally agree with them if you are a action/wildlife shooter, Nikon Zmount it’s not there yet.
But for portrait, landscape etc you can’t compare to z6/z7 in my opinion
I don’t want to talk about video...
The last King Nikon d850 is close to 2000$ at B&h now. Why??
I think Nikon will not invest much effort to dslr anymore, they are looking forward to the future!
I’m 100% sure After I watched the new D6 (or D5s) getting destroyed from the canon 1dx3 at the same price range!
The DSLR discontinued List will be longer
Luckily for canon R users !They keep shooting/nailing Birds in flight with 12fps mechanical and 20fps electronic silent at 45mpx.
I would like to do the same with Nikon

I don't hate them, I simply don't have a use for them at my age.  I look at the current Z models as infants in an ever changing and evolving electronic camera world.  I know this will change with time and they'll grow up to be more useful sometime in the future like DSLR's did from the D-1 and D-2 to the useful D-3 series and on.

Has the DSLR reached an apex with no room for improvement?  I can't answer that, but Nikon still makes 35mm film cameras, (F-6 and FM-10).  I would think DSLR's aren't going away anytime soon.

I'll say this, I believe we've seen the pinnacle of Nikon quality about a decade ago with the D-3 series, D700, and the D-800's.  More and more they're being out sourced to Thailand and China except for the flagship models.  I can only hope Nikon boots some bean counters and gets back to their traditional quality, "Made in Japan".

I have the F mount lenses all usable with the Z adaptor
but the Z bodies are not there yet!

I don't know why some people are down on Mirrorless cameras?

They use identical science as the DSLRs to capture images, but have distinct advantages. They don’t have the additional weight of prisms and mirrors. They don't have a loud mirror slap with its accompanying vibration. They have an EVF that displays the image with all its in-camera adjustments, which is Ideal for making creative, on-the-spot decisions... before the shot is taken... eliminating some guess work and the need for taking additional, what-if shots while you’re on location. What a fantastic time and film saver.

Granted the EVFs are not quite there yet, but they will improve over time. What do DSLRs have that’s better, other than faster rapid-fire shooting? Nothing that I know of. I have a D850 and a Z 7, and the only difference in images quality is what the Z 7s new, larger lens mount and S Line lenses bring to the equation.

Sorry for asking Walt: "So, which one is it, then?"

IMHO, the EVF is one's contact with the picture and some
subject won't ever wait to let you fiddle with anything!

So far I've had a Z6, Z7 and now Z7ii and can say the Z's are very "there"

They've all performed perfectly, and every time you turn around, another Z lens appears on the market making the DSLR's and other manufacturers cameras look more like they are behind the times.

Nikon has a great winner on their hands, and while everyone was concentrating on the few items that they weren't the best with. (high speed focus and dual card slot), Nikon was slowly releasing great lenses and taking top slot in each lens type that is released.

Now they have answered the feature set for 90% plus of the photo crowd on the new bodies, and have just rounded out the holy trinity of lenses with the number one slot on each for image quality, color, and speed.

Oh and the evf is great.  If you havent tried one yet, rent or borrow a camera with one.  Nothing like taking a pic into the sun without getting blinded.  Nothing like being able to see your pic  before it's snapped.  Nothing like being able to see your histogram, highlights or numerous other items in your evf while taking a shot.

While taking a shot, the only thing I ever wanted / want to see
is my subject. It was so in film times and still is. That implies
that some one should have abstract and precise ideas of what
was / is going on prior to SR.

At SR, when I aim at a subject, I want nothing between it and me.

You can have that as well.

nice thing is that if you do leave it on, you can quickly see if something is overexposed and compensate on the fly.

I would only suggest it be tried. Could open new possibilities.  Nothing is between you and the shot that wasn’t already.  You just get the opportunity to get a better shot.

Night photography is even better.
