Hi Group -

Does anyone have any intel on the current state of wait times for the AF-S NIKKOR 500mm f/5.6E PF ED VR? I'm considering buying it, and would love to have it for a trip to the tropics in 3 weeks. I've seen lots of comments about weeks and months of backorder, but nothing that is dated anytime this year. Has there been any improvement on the backorder? I called Nikon and the service center said they were not given that information.

thanks.

Have you checked with any shops like B&H?  They may have one or more or they may be able to tell you how long the wait is.

Check with one of the retailers, either a giant like B&H or a local to you brick and mortar shop. They can contact their sales rep. at Nikon and ask for you. You won't get an answer yourself.

Here in Sweden, the retailers still have a back log to fill before they can take orders and leave an estimate of the delivery time.

B&H currently indicates that they have limited quantities and are selling this lens on a first come first served basis. Other retailers such as Amazon are listing delivery dates in March and April. Any of them will gladly take your order and fill it when they have the stock in hand. Be aware that with some types of credit your card may be charged at checkout even if they don't currently have the item available to ship.

Unless you have a pressing need for this item it may be better to let the first adopters get theirs before placing your order. Also, if there are any problems with this lens, the first adopters will find them.

Thanks all. That's interesting with B&H - the message on their site has literally changed from "this item is backordered" to what Ron mentioned since I posted. They must have just gotten more stock in. I didn't think to see if Amazon had delivery dates.

In any case, the research has led me to posts about a potential 600mm pf lens coming out (posts on this forum indicated possibly even last year), which is much more what I would like. (Anyone heard new rumors on that one...?)

I think I'm going to wait for news on the 600 for the time being.

Hi?
B&H has had my money since the 30th of December, and every week they tell me that they have no idea when my lens will be in. They will only tell me that it is still unavailable.
I really hope they are not messing with me.

B&H are reputable dealers. It is probably the Covid situation that leaves all international trade time estimates very uncertain.
