What is an inexpensive (for a beginner) tripod for my P1000? Would I need a mounting plate for this camera (it’s not light)? I don’t need to travel with it, just lug it outside and take pictures.  I am a little confused about what type tripod (or tripod head) I would need if I also need to use a mounting plate? Thanks.

I would go with any of the Benro Series 2 aluminium tripods to start with.

What head to get depends on whether you want to shoot video as well as stills. For mostly stills, I would look at the G series ballheads from Sirui. If you shoot more video, a 4-way head is a better option, such as the Sirui FD-01. These Sirui heads use industry standard Arca-Swiss compatible quick release plates and come with a plate. A leg and head set like these will last for many years to come, and they can handle a mirrorless or DSLR with a long lens if you decide to go that way in the future. The cost is somewhere around the $250 mark with the ball head or $390 with the 4-way. Not cheap, but very good value for money.

If money is too tight, something like a Vanguard VEO2 can handle the P1000, but it won't last as long and is not as good a support. It comes with a head and is around $80

I now use a Manfrotto ball head and find it frustrating to make small adjustments with a long lens, going back to a pan/tilt.

Mike, have you tried a good ballhead? A smooth running head where you can adjust the friction is a complete other kettle of fish compared to the Manfrotto and Gitzo dinosaurs.

What do you consider inexpensive?

Merco_61's advise above is excellent...I would suggest you follow that advise, but I expect you will end up above your $100 threshold.  At $100, you are probably best served by going to a local photo shop (or Best Buy if you don't have a photo shop) and pick one - hopefully the sturdiest - that you are comfortable operating.

Tom, I did leave a low-budget alternative as well. At least on this side of the pond, most B+M stores carry Vanguard.

Maybe $100 or so.

This post is less about whatever tripod you decide upon and more about how it behaves when the P1000 is mounted and its lens is fully extended. I own a P1000. I don't use the camera to shoot video so I bought a tripod without a ball head but which could be panned. Here are images of the P1000 mounted on the tripod.

Something was immediately apparent when the lens was fully extended. Even with the lens axis aligned over the front leg of the tripod, the shift of weight forward caused the aiming point to dip down perceptibly. One can almost see it in comparing the first two pictures.

LENS FULLY EXTENDED

Since I couldn't find a device akin to a lens foot common to telephoto lenses, I came up with an alternative way to keep the P1000's center of gravity more closely aligned over the central axis of the tripod when the lens is fully extended. The hardware to do this is readily available.

  1. 1/4" to 3/8" Adapter (https://www.amazon.c...lv_ov_lig_dp_it)
  2. Clamp Adapter Mount for Quick Release Plate (https://www.amazon.c...lv_ov_lig_dp_it)
  3. 120mm Quick Release Plate (https://www.amazon.c...lv_ov_lig_dp_it)

Here's the result. FWIW, there are longer QR plates available (e.g., 150mm) if desired. This rig was also used with my Nikon D7500 in combination with my Sigma 100-400mm telephoto before I got a lens foot for the Sigma.

thank you i bought all 3 items you posted on amazon, to make the camera more stable im going to fill in the gap,

im going to use cling wrap plastic to protect the mount and camera then use this

https://www.amazon.c...0?ie=UTF8&psc=1

its moldable thermoplastic Polymer, this stuff gets hard as a rock and you can re use it.

im using Black to match the camera. once done ill remove the plastic wrap,

ill mold it with the lens all the way in and once harden and the lens goes out it wont tilt down or move.

i could use this https://www.amazon.c...86099962&sr=8-2

but for hand making it should be more cheaper and you get more for your buck, like quick release and swivel.

you posted this https://www.amazon.c...lv_ov_lig_dp_it

in your image you have another plate under it, can you link me to amazon i think ill need that also thank.

im going to try mounting it on a igloo cooler,

1 can take the heat

2 can take the cold

3 protects camera from getting smashed

4 set it up on a picnic table at eye level

5 use wireless remote for no camera shake.

thermos

fits inside and enough room to add cushion to it. be using a thick towel,
or buy a padded camera bag

The other plate you mention is just the QR plate that came with my tripod. It has a 1/2"-20 stud that fits the typical camera receptacle.

QR plates usually are included with tripods.

The advice that's been offered here in previous posts should help you select a tripod. If you need more, I'd suggest that you post in a forum that's dedicated to Coolpix cameras like Nikon Coolpix Talk Forum: Digital Photography Review. There are many P1000 members there. Also, and I mean this in a nice way, you need to do bit more of your own research.

are you talking to the person who started the post?

i found this topic by searching and the topic shows>Tripod for P1000? so i figured this would be the best place to ask.

the p1000 is not your typical weight and im sure most cameras will work on most tripods, the link i posted is i found it for sale and maybe some one could look at the spec and tell me.

i do search and i would think some PRO here would be the BEST place to ask, i dont want no junk to find out the tripod broke then broke my camera, cost a lot of money,

pretty simple answer is the tripod junk or not for my needs.

thanks for the link checking it out now.

Two things to look out for with that tripod:

  1. Geared centre columns in cheap tripods nearly always mean some extra slop that isn't there with a friction-locked column.
  2. The Orion heads don't have a stellar reputation and seldom lock fully in all joints.

Besides that, the Vanguard I tried to introduce people to as a cheap option in post #2 already uses Arca-Swiss compatible QR plates, so there is no need for the extra parts in bluzman's solution. You only need a 120 or 150 mm plate, the mounting base for the plate is already there.

The problem with a tripod for the P1000 isn't the mass itself as it is nowhere near a DSLR with a long lens. The problem is the high magnification at the tele end that makes most tripods under the $120 or so street price range too wobbly.

The alu legs with either the ballhead or the two-way, depending on your preference. It isn't a final tripod, I will never need another... but they are the only sturdy cheap tripods I have seen.
