I had a strange thing happen to the metering on my Z 7 the other day. The camera was set up for Single Spot Focusing, Center weighted Metering, Cloudy Sky WB and Auto ISO. The lens was a 70-200mm 2.8G II, attached to a 2X Teleconverter.

The metering and Auto ISO would change automatically depending on where the camera was pointing. At one point I noticed that the image in the viewfinder was far too bright. The ISO was stuck at 8000 and didn’t adjust when I pointed the camera at differently lit scenes. I turned the camera off then on again and the metering and ISO went back to normal again.

Maybe it happened because of some setting I had made. Has anyone else had this problem?

You did the first and right thing to do in such cases: Off & On.

None of the setups may provoke such "function freeze".

If I may ask, why centre weighted metering? A relic of film times,
RAW converter are very capable to address the very minor tweaks
that may bring… go Matrix.

I would leave WB on Auto — if you shoot RAW that is — as WB is
the less critical parameter at SR.

If there should be a bug, keep an eye on future firmware updates.

Have a good time!

Thanks for the tips.

My main subjects are usually birds and other little critters. Although I mainly use a 200-500, I find that I need to close crop quite a bit in post. The Center weighted or Spot metering seems to give me better subject exposure, eliminating the influence of the background.

My Z 7 is always set to Auto WB and RAW, but I had to switch to Cloudy the other day because the colours were unsaturated to the point where the grass was almost grey and dull. Using Cloudy WB produced much truer colours all around.

I'll certainly keep a close eye on firmware updates for this mirrorless. I believe it still needs a bit of tweaking on the metering and AF. I use my D850 as a comparison. It does an excellent job, and I'm waiting for the Z 7 to catch up.

i  had few issue with my Z6 where i had to turn it off and on at times with auto-iso too. and few times shutter got suck or error with lens. but i love my gen 1 tamron 150-600mm but hate the fact its MF mode and have to manually focus it. love it on D7200 you find some quirks or flaws since nikon first good entry to mirrorless camera. said at start will have some issue that will pop up. just think next month get eye af and CF express card upgrade.
