This has been a big annoyance for me since I replaced my old Samsung Note 3, running Android 5 with the Samsung Note 8, running Android 8 Oreo. The old phone used to connect to the camera's wifi reliably, and while prompting "Internet may not be available", the connection was established and I could transfer images using the WMU app. With the Note 8 (and other Android 8 phones I tested) the phone's message when trying to connect to the camera is "Waiting for internet connection to improve" and the connection is never made. I tried every trick I could think of including camera firmware update, running the phone in safe mode, using static IP, WPS and PIN and extensive internet searching for almost a year with no clue on how to solve the problem. My Kludge solution was to keep using the Note 3 for getting the (reduced size) images from the camera and then use NFC between the phones to get them into the Note 8, yikes!!! I also contacted Nikon support right around the time I encountered the problem and they could not offer a solution.

SO... last night I contacted them again and voila, there is a solution.

Apparently, the ONLY thing I did not try is putting the phone in airplane mode... sounds obvious, right? RIGHT? :)

Once you do this you get a different message (as Phil says in Groundhog Day: "Different is good") when trying to connect to the camera. It says "internet may not be available" instead of "waiting for internet connection to improve" and the connection is made. For those of you still in full frustration mode, take a deep breath... as I did yesterday.

Here is the response from Nikon support.

This is a follow up to inform you that there is no issue with our app and the version of Android you are using. We kindly suggest you try the following:
  • Turn on your phone airplane mode.
  • Make sure your Bluetooth is powered on and your phone battery is fully charged.
  • When connecting to the phone via WiFi it may say "will connect when internet connection improves". Go to the app and attempt to connect by tapping on take a photo or view photo.
  •  Make sure that the phone is not attempting to connect to your home router.

My camera always has the same message. I go to the Nikon app then press enable on camera then press view pictures on camera then click on those to download. Hope this helps.
