Fire off-camera remote (sb-700) but not on-camera (D3200) master

I have 2 sb-700 speed lights and want the remote to fire but not the on-camera (D3200) master. I tried setting the master on-camera speedlight to – – – but that doesn't work. I know I could purchase a remote radio trigger but I was hoping to make this work with just the 2 flashes. Is this possible using the D3200 and sb-700s? Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Simplest way to do this is with a Nikon SG-3IR.

Scott, I think he would need to use one of the SB-700-s as a master as the D3xxx bodies don't support using the pop-up with AWL.

I haven't used the SB-700 for a long time, but if it works anything like the SB-910 in master mode, you select the M channel and set it to ---, then set A to TTL. On the slave, set the flash to the same channel and group A. The master will still glow slightly after the shutter opens, but a piece of unexposed but developed slide film taped over the fresnel lens should be enough of a VIS shield and only let the IR through, doing the same work as a SG-31R does on the more advanced bodies..

I mentioned the SG-31R as it sounded as thought the OP was using them as optical slaves and just didn't want light from the on-camera flash.

At 15 bucks, it is decidedly cheaper than wireless triggers for two external flashes.

I agree completely, if he was using an AWL-capable body...

I've never used an sb700, but don't they have S1 and S2 slave modes like any other strobe?

The sb-700 can be either slave or master. It doesn’t have a SU-4 mode to be used as a manual slave. The D3200 can’t be used as a master without an external flash. The pop-up flash is only a flash, nothing else.

When I mentioned S1 and S2, I was referring to manual, optical slave modes. Those should trigger with any flash.

I don't think the SB-700 has any non-AWL slave modes.

Wow! A $330 flash with no dumb slave support. Little wonder I haven't used a Nikon speedlight since the SB28.

OP, if you want to use these in manual, you can buy optical slave triggers for them for cheap. But by the time you buy those and the SG-31R you could spend another $20-30 and get radio triggers (which would give you radio shutter release as well).

I'd have to look it up, but I'm pretty sure that my SB-700 has an SU-4 mode. I have never used it though... once I went to radio triggers, I never looked back.

Like I said, it has been years since I used an SB-700 and I misremembered. There is an SU-4 mode, but it is hidden in the custom functions menu.

Ron, as you have one, can you check if it triggers on IR or on visible light? The manual doesn't tell.

If it triggers on an IR pulse, you can use an SG-31R and set the pop-up to a low manual setting to suppress the pre-flash. If the slaves are close enough, they should trigger that way. The pop-up flash will still provide some light, but the shield should make sure that there are no reflexes from the trigger flash.

The best way to run AWL with a D3xxx body is to use an SC-29 remote cord to one flash and set that as master to control a second flash or more. This gets the master off-camera, so you won't need to turn the output off.

In reality, AWL is enough of a hassle that a set of cheap radio links are a much better choice.

Many thanks, looks like the radio triggers are the way to go.

I'm in the middle of setting up a new computer network at the moment but when I get a chance I'll check the SB-700 and see how it's triggered. I seem to remember seeing a reference to using the SG-31R with this flash but, as I mentioned, I eventually threw up my hands and decided that there was just too much hassle involved with using the flash with optical triggers. The radio triggers I bought are cheap but more than adequate for my modest needs. And, they support iTTL which I don't use. I prefer full manual.

Off camera flash for your D3200 can be controlled directly from the camera:

Goto the

Custum Setting Men>

Bracketing and Flash>

Flash control for built in flash>

Commander mode:

Now pick you options and set group

Now what you have done is make your popup flash a master and your sb-700 or any other sb- flash in the group a slave.

You can also put a little  attachment that slides onto you flash shoe to blocks any flash light from popup if you only want the off camera flash. You can also set the popup to 1 of 3 modes: --  is off, M is Manual, TTL.

The Nikon SG-3IR IR Panel attaches to the camera's flash shoe, and covers and prevents the camera's built-in flash from influencing the exposure, while still permitting its use as a Commander for off-camera Speedlights.

Finally got around to messing with this and, Peter, you're right. SU4 mode is buried in the custom function menu.

I set the flash to SU4 mode in custom settings, then set the flash to remote (via the power switch) and the flash to auto. I then set the popup flash on my D610 to commander mode and it fired the SB700 when the popup fired. I don't currently have an SG-31R so I just blocked the flash with a piece of opaque plastic taped to the unit. Once again, the SB700 fired with the popup. Very unscientific but hopefully of some help.

Stapelt, this would work if the body was D5xxx or higher. The D3xxx don’t support using the pop-up as master.
