I went out to listen to some bands yesterday.

First a shot or the presenter.

Excellent set, Peter. I wouldn't have thought to use an 85mm for concert images--what an interesting choice, with great results, of course! I see there are a few other focal lengths scattered throughout--were you using two bodies or switching lenses?

I used the 85 on a D7200 and an old Tamron 28-75 on the D700. The 85 is a bit long on DX, but works in this quite large café. I usually shoot with the 105DC on the D700 and either a Tamron 17-50 on a DX body or the 28-75 on the nearly worn-out D700. I don't like to use the 24-70 for concerts as it is much more difficult to blend in with large, clearly pro lenses.

I agree with Nicole. Very nice set. And, I got a chuckle out of the Paul McCartney style guitar one of the musicians was using.

I've found that the AFS 85mm f/1.8 is fantastic on DX. I love using it on my D7000. Even more so than on my D610.

Ron, there were two Hofner style instruments in use that evening. Both Kant and Ringrost use the Hofner bass guitar to good effect even if the Kant bassist uses a copy.

For me, the 85 has always been a difficult focal length to use, probably because I have used the classic Takumar and Nikkor 105 mm lenses so much. It feels too short on FX and a bit on the long side on DX, but that is possible to get used to.

I think all of the photos turned out great! I wished my camera would take crisp clean indoor picture like these. Both my wife and I are dissapointed in that area. Out side it is great but indoors not so good.

But you have a knack for taking pictures of people. Each photo whether full body, half a just face you seem to be able to compose it perfectly including things needed to be in the picture and others out. I see many angles that also make for good pictures. Some of the photos I see action not just still shots, one where the female is flipping her head and strumming of the quitar. All in all great photos.

I personally don’t do people much because I don’t have the expertise in it. Maybe a class or two is needed.

Steve, you have the same camera I used for most of these. The D7200 is quite amazing in low-light for a consumer DX body. I don't remember what lenses you have, but I think they are mostly slow zooms. All the shots with 85 in their file names are shot with the D7200 and an old 85/1.8D. The Picture control used is [PT]Portrait and the only noise reduction is the built-in in Capture NX-D. The exposure data can be seen if you follow the Flickr link.

A set of lenses for indoor portraiture in available light doesn't have to be expensive. A 35/1.8DX, 50/1.8 and 85/1.8 (all the current AF-S versions) cost under $900 new together from B&H and the 85 is more than half of that sum. The 85 is usually too long in a home setting, so @500 covers everything from full body to head and shoulders comfortably. The 50/1.8D can still be bought new but the 85/1.8D is only available used today. They are both good alternatives to the current versions with different strengths and weaknesses.

When you have fast(ish) glass, it is mostly a matter of looking at other people's portrait photography and learning to see while you shoot lots. One thing to remember with a series like this is that I only show the best, where I got the timing right, as well as the angle and composition. I shot ~1300 frames in 4 hours to get these... There are lots more that are sooo close, but not quite what I wanted.

I would start by shooting lots and maybe use us for critique when you get those nearly there, but... shots. When you feel comfortable with the basics is the time to take a class or two to polish what you have learnt on your own, and maybe add lighting to the equation.

That is helpful knowing it is more of a lens issue. I have not replaced the broken one yet and maybe I just need to do that. Well actually I did buy a used one but had to send it back. But that was with a lens that I had. I will look at your suggestions.

I was looking at this lens.

The 50/1.8D is a nice lens that renders the transition between sharp and unsharp better than the AF-S version, but the background is busier than with the AF-S one. Which is better is a matter of taste. The 50/1.8D is prone to flare and a good hood is essential when using it outdoors. Nikon's rubber hood HR-2 works, but the HS-9 or an old HS-7 are better options.

These are all with the 50/1.8D on DX

All wonderful pictures.   I am sold on the Nikon AF NIKKOR 50mm f/1.8D Lens

Have you found the 50mm workable for indoor pictures as far as range?  I guess I could buy two one with a smaller range

A 50 on DX has a slightly wider field of view than the classic portraiture lenses in the 85-105 mm on film. They work well for half-body to head and shoulders portraits. For full body or environmental portraits, a 35 or even a 24 works better. It's a shame that Nikon don't make a compact DX version of the 24/1.8 as the FX 24 is a bit on the large side. The DX 35 is quite cheap and seems to handle the 24 MP sensor well. I haven't used one on the D7200 yet but I will try to borrow one from a friend and use it for a week soon.

I am going to just get both the 50 and 35.    Does B&H have price match that you know of?  I don't see it anyplace but their system  is down right now until tonight for maintenance so I can only put in my Cart.   I can order this evening it says but Adorama Camera has them for less.  I am not familiar with Adorama at all.

You can ask... Adorama is a well renowned dealer as well. Check that you are looking at US versions and not grey before you order. Both B&H and Adorama stand behind their store warranties, but having Nikon's warranty gives peace of mind.

Is the system down for maintenance or is it something to do with their strict adherence to religious holidays?

I guess they really didn't say why they were down.   It does say at 7:15 PM this evening I will be able to place my order.    Yes I have heard of the Grey Products and I will verify that.

Thank you so much for your help.

Yeah I think it is Grey.   They have one for $104.00.  They also have one for the $131 the same as B&H and it says  "Nikon USA Factory Warranty"   I will buy from B&H.   Again Thank you so much

B&H closes their store and website for the Jewish Sabbath every week. It's been inconvenient for me once or twice, but I admire them for sticking to their religious convictions.

We'll look forward to seeing what you do with some new lenses, Steve!

I hope to see what you do with the new lenses in my one week... challenges. It is a *very* efficient way of getting to know new equipment fast.

Is this the right 35mm lens that is comparable to the 50mm

35

https://www.bhphotov...ikkor_35mm.html

This was the 50.

AF Nikkor 50mm F1.8D - Sample Photos - Lens Sample Photos - NikonForums.com

The only difference I see is the D versus the G but I don’t find a 35 in the D

EDIT Here: google can be your friend. I found this

Finally, we end with the letter G, which indicates that the lens has an electronic diaphragm control, meaning that the f/stop is set from the camera. On older NIKKORS you may see the letter D, and that means distance information is factored into the metering process. These days all NIKKORS have distance encoders, so you won't see D on new NIKKOR lenses—only G.

The DX 35 is made to fill the same function on DX as the 50/1.8 does on FX. There never was a screw-drive DX 35 as the screw-drive was obsolete technology when this lens came out. As you have a D7200, both AF and AF-S lenses work as intended, so you can use all autofocus lenses with your body. This wasn't the case with the D40x you started out with.

The 35 draws more like the D than the G 50 in that the transition from sharp to unsharp is nice, but the background can get a bit busy sometimes. I, personally, prefer this rendering, which is why I haven't upgraded my 50 or 85 to the AF-S versions.

Lots of comments here regarding the lenses, etc.  The right tool for the job is definitely important...It will make it easier to achieve the desired results, but...having the best equipment does not guarantee the desired results simply by having the best tools...

Two other points that Peter made should not be forgotten...Lots of experience and you are only seeing the best images...I'm going to guess that there are maybe 75 images there and Peter noted that he shot over 1300.  Perhaps he had others that were worthy of publication but chose not to include them for various reasons.  I am sure that most of the 1300 were correctly exposed and in focus...thus it is the small things that cause images to be kept or dropped...

I think this is something that "gets missed" by many photographers...it is, at the same time, one of the easiest and one of the hardest parts of photography.  It is easy for most folks to go through and "get rid of" images like this:

D50_0814.JPG

Yep, that's one I shot a little over a week ago...

Too many folks I have seen remove the easy ones like above (some don't even do that!) but they don't go over the rest of the images the way they should.  Some are good just the way they are, but others will need a slight crop or some individual adjustments to get it to look its best.  But it goes further than that...

I was in the right place at the right time and got several images of a guy on a break away running the length of the field.  I took a few frames at different intervals during his run...I have seen photographers post 20+ images of a run like that...in my case, I have always preferred quality over quantity...while I hate the background in this shot, I kept it because it was the only time there was someone else in the same frame!  I kept a couple of the other shots too along with one post-score.

Bootleggers24Feb-0854.jpg

and yes, that one is cropped some and it has had a few slight adjustments - could probably use a few more :)!  In any case, going from 1300 down to even 130 isn't always easy...but it is something that gets easier with experience...It also depends on the audience...A good photo editor would not allow that second shot into publication because of the background.  But, I was shooting for the team and I am sure the player would love to have that image...

Steve, if you're going to do portraits, you're going to want that 85mm lens. If not now, eventually.

And, I'm going to break with my esteemed fellow shooter and recommend the AFS FX G lenses over their older screw drive cousins. Down the road I see Nikon completely doing away with in camera focusing motors (except perhaps on really high end bodies) and, eventually you're going to need or want to upgrade your camera. Buying newer (AFS) glass helps to future proof your investment. And, while some of the older lenses may be optically better, I think the difference is probably negligible in most cases. You're not shooting test targets.

The original prime lens selection that Peter mentioned looks to me like an ideal all around photography kit. The 35mm DX is an exceptional value assuming you plan to stick with DX bodies. Otherwise, the more expensive FX version might be a better choice. The other two lenses...  the AFS FX 50mm f/1.8 and AFS 85mm f/1.8 round out a really exceptional and fairly inexpensive kit.

As Nicole indicated, B&H observes all Jewish holidays and closes at sundown on Fridays for the Sabbath. I believe that they also observe other (non Jewish) religious holidays.
