Nef files are not a standardized image format. They are a Nikon proprietary file containing the data the camera captured.

You have two (possibly three) choices.

1.) Shoot jpeg.

2.) Get a Mac. MacOS has raw conversions built into the system.

3.) Look for a Windows extension that might offer raw conversion preview in Explorer windows, but dunno if one actually exists.

Nikon NEF Codec worked up to 8.1 officially. I have no idea if it works on 10. I am not sure if you get previews in explorer or not as I haven't owned a windows box for many years.

The NEF codec does indeed work with Windows 7. I have it installed on my Windows 7 work station. It may also work on Windows 10... I have a windows 10 laptop that doesn't get much use. I believe I installed it on that machine when I installed Nikon's NX-D software. Next time I boot it up, I'll check.

You should be able to view them with Nikon View NX2. You have to open Nikon Vew and browse the folder that contains your nef files with Nikon Vew. But if you want to see them outside of View NX2 (or the other raw converter), you have to save the as jpeg files.
