I am new to Nikon NX-D. I cannot find instructions on how to download photos from an SD card. Can someone please help a newbie? Thanks.

Capture NX-D doesn't have a tool for ingesting photos. The easiest way to get your photos on the computer is to use the tools available in the operating system. If you use a card reader, just copy them with explorer or finder to where you want them. If you use a cable, both macOS and Windows have tools for importing content from the camera. You can use Transfer2 from ViewNX-i, but it is a clumsy tool.
