Just wondering what other people think will happen with the current line up of Nikon DSLR's? Seems like some are likely to receive updates whilst some seem to have been forgotten about.

Current Line Up

D5 - January 2016

D810/A - June 2014

D750 - September 2014

D610 - October 2013

Df - November 2013

D500 - January 2016

D7200 - March 2015

D5500 - January 2015

D3400 - August 2016

Looking at the release date of previous generation of cameras it looks like Nikon update their cameras every 2 years. The Dx, D8x0, D7x00, D5x00, D3x00 all have roughly 2 year gaps between iterations. Which leaves the D610 and Df as the outliers not receiving an update on schedule.

So are these going to be phased out?

Going on schedule the D810 and soon after the D750 are due for replacements. I have heard rumours of a D8x0 announcement at Photokina this year.

What is everyone else's thoughts? Will we see a long overdue D6x0? Or will it stay there, mostly filling a space in the product spectrum? Will the Df continue to be the weird uncle of the family?

D820 (or D850?)

50Mp sensor, relatively weak buffer (compared with D5 even with D500), crazy AF system, matching D500/D5...

*And yes, expect it at Photokina

D620 20-24Mp sensor, crazy AF system, same features as D500, just FX - no higher pixelcount, atleast not extraordinary.

Cannot imagine D7300, as D500 is everything I expected from such^

The D6x0 series will probably not be continued as the D750 became what the D610 should have been. If the D750 had been a D700 replacement, the D6x0 would have been the perfect bridge from the DX bodies but there is simply no room for a body between the D7200 and the D750 unless it can be produced cheaply by simply not discontinuing an old model.

The Df probably won't be modernized as it is such an isolated niche camera. My dream Nikons would be the Df form factor with a more natural front wheel placement, the D4 AF, a useful buffer and the D4s sensor in both monochrome and colour versions. These specifications are old-tech enough not to steal sales from the D5. They got things so nearly right in the Df but the D600 AF module and the buffer limitations crippled it too much for me.

Don't think you two are right on the D6x0 series, because... D750 is such a vast leap in the price...

Don't know about prices in the states, but D610 was a sub 10K DKK item, while D750 is much more pricey - not a tiny bit, more 40-50% extra on top of the price, the gap up to D810 was smaller then between D610 and D750

*Nikon NEEDS something to compete with Canon on entry level FX, Canon cannot get hundred percent marketshare because of 6D price.

The price difference today between the D610 and the D750, both with the 24-85 is less than 14% from all the three largest Swedish webstores.

The 6D is 8% cheaper than the D750, both with the consumer 24- zooms from each manufacturer. The 6D Mk II will probably be quite a bit more expensive as it will need a large update to the AF to get current.

8590 @ D610

12990 @ D750

In Denmark

Slightly more than 50% extra, both prices for body only - no kit lens.

In Sweden, the D610 is SEK 13390 for body-only, the D750 is 17790 body-only, 32% more for the D750. The D750 is approximately the same price, it is just that the D610 seems to still sell for a higher price here. The difference is much smaller between the best-selling kits, though.

As I see it, three FX cameras need attention. My personal guess is that the D6xx is gone... no upgrade. The D750 needs an upgrade to keep up with technology. Ditto for the D810. The Df is a niche product but I do expect it to be upgraded (for Nikon's anniversary).

I think that the D75x will become the entry level FX camera. The D8xx should see a major upgrade... expect the popup flash to go away, and be replaced by speedlight radio control. All other electronics will be brought up to D5/D500 levels although I expect the D8xx series to continue to be the megapixel leader in the Nikon camp.

I hope you are right about this! I'm hoping a D820 is my next camera. Add me to the list of those who think the D6xx will disappear...though it is priced neatly between the D7200 and the D750--almost exactly in the middle (on the NikonUSA website anyway...).

So...when do these updates usually appear? :)

Cannot imagine D7300, as D500 is everything I expected from such^

But here there is almost $1000 difference between the D7200 and D500 right now, so I can't imagine them letting the D7x00 series lapse. Too big of a gap between the D5x00 and the D500...

Sorry for being so American-centric and putting everything in dollars instead of percentages... :)

You are probably right regarding the D7x00 series, I just cannot imagine the specs, how it could fit in.

As for the radio control, that would make sense, but kinda hope the build-in flash will stay... I tend to use it a lot when shooting mix of indoor and outdoor, especially when weather is Scandinavian.

Let's hope they include the radio transceiver in the D8x0, but the WR-R10 is unfortunately probably here to stay. I like having the commander on the camera body, but I can't remember using the built-in flash as a light source except to check that it worked when I bought my bodies.

The D7x00 will probably become even more of a DX companion to the D7x0 as it doesn't have to be a speed monster with the D500 available. I suppose we will see even better DR and an articulated screen in the next version

I'd like to see a DF-2 using the sensor from the D5; and a DF-M using the sensor from the full-frame microscope camera...

I can dream.

Interesting discussion...My thoughts:

I think the D7xxx series sticks around as the high end consumer product with the D500 being the "pro" version in DX...it wouldn't surprise me to see a D5S and a D500S show up whenever they decide to update the D5...

I can agree that the D750 is pretty much the continuation of the D6xx series.  Maybe they will do an upgrade of of both but keep the features lower on the D620 than the D760 (?).  But, do they need a low priced FX?

I like some of the ideas about the next (if any) DF version, but I don't really have any interest in that line right now, so haven't thought about it much.

I would definitely like to see an upgrade in the D8xx line and like others, I expect it will be more MP and more features...I don't really care about the built in flash as I don't have them now on my D4 bodies, but I did occasionally use them for a bit of fill now and again on my former bodies.

If it were my choice, I'd basically have 2 types of bodies...The D3xxx through D7xxx, D6xx and D750 which would all be the same physical button placement, similar physically, etc. with some differences of course based on level for the entry level to high end consumer in both DX and FX.  For the D5 (and beyond), D5xx, and D8xx, I would have the exact same body as the D5 and make those with true pro level features - the D5xx being there for pros who needed DX for various projects, the D8xx for those who needed the large MP / more artistic but with a reasonable FPS / buffer.  The D5 and beyond would remain a perfect photojournalist camera with high FPS, buffer and low light.

I know that you can shoot sports or artistic shots with any of the cameras in the lineup from a D3xxx up, but separating out the pro bodies will allow them to make each the best they can be for their intended pro audience.

Oh - and BTW, my D4 is finally on its way back home from repair!  They had to wait for some parts.  It is supposed to arrive tomorrow!  Just in time for my first Friday football game!  And for Opening Day on Saturday for the local rugby team!  Looking forward to having both bodies back!  On the other hand, with a wedding coming up in a few weeks, I was thinking about telling my wife I needed to buy a D5 and then "settling" for a D500 :)!  I probably would have ended up renting a body though...
