With a Sigma 150-600 a 2x is not a good idea, even if the camera would focus (which i doubt) you would be raising the iso too much to keep the shutter speed up, the advice which none of us like is to get closer to the subject, try shooting that lens wide open which may let you lower the iso so allow for a bit more cropping.

Not 100% sure on this but is one a FX and the other a DX lens, which camera do you want it for.

Is it a crop as my first thought is the effect the cropping/ enlarging is having on the out of focus areas

The more reach phrase came about when Nikon and others wanted us to give up our full-frame film cameras and buy into the new digital world, sensor manufacturers struggled with making larger sensors so the crop/Dx was launched.
In some ways you can understand why they pushed the more reach myth as buy a new digital camera with a "reduced field of view" would not have worked as well.
Nikon shooter is 100% correct no extra reach with a crop sensor, now unless you are cropping DX from say a D850 you can have more pixels on the subject with DX rather than a cropped FX but thats a different can of worms.

Not a lot wrong with f11 for a mirrorless contrast based focusing system its if you need to use phase detect it could be a problem, the main problem i see is unless some drastic improvement is made in contrast-detect for lock-on speed you would need to use phase detect for action captures.
Canon will know all the downsides so i guess they have a focus system in the wings that will cope, interesting to see

Have you got any art type settings locked in

Has the camera had any sort of knock, its possible the phase detect unit is slightly out, if so this would not affect live view focusing as it uses contrast as far as know.
Have you tried using a tripod and one lens, say the 70 200 at 200, without moving the camera set it at its max minus adjustment take an image then set it to its max plus adjustment and take the same image, see what difference you get

The question, Mike, is directed to…?
The OP, if his answer was yes i was going to explain the downside to that in handheld scenarios.

If you can take this opportunity to go a bit longer, as said the 150-600 are good or the 100-400 although i would check if the latter are compatible with your camera.

Hi, from what I read, the FX is a bigger sensor and receives more image detail equalling better image quality. I find the image quality a little dull, despite using varying settings and image save types and am presuming that its the sensor. I have post capture software that can improve that, but I'dlike to get the best image possible from source.
To be honest and not trying to be rude only helpful,FX is not a magic bullet, lets see some DX results so we can help before buying into FX.

Sorry for the delay in replying. I bought a D3200 camera thinking it had a full frame (35mm) sensor. I mis-read the description on the sellers website. I just can't be bothered selling the DX and getting an FX. I just thought it might be easier to change the sensor. However, since my post I understand that there may be additional issues with the DX/FX sensor selection in the camera's software. Any thoughts?
Why do you want FX,what do you think would let you down with DX.

Not suggesting flare, thinking more sensor damage from being pointed at the sun.

A few possibilities, but if its in the same place every time then i wonder if its been pointed at the sun.

I have not used it but atmospheric degradation increases with the distance, other things come into play like surface your shooting over, temperature and others, the reason it looks good on the camera back is due to the small backlit image you are viewing, going to stick my neck here and say buying a different camera and doing the same thing will give the same results.
The reason you have seen others complain is because of the same thing, not the answer you want but i had a P900 and would limit my expectations as the distance increased, i viewed it as a tool to get large images of small subjects over a short to medium distance.
Look at this about 1m30 sec in you can see the foreground being distorted due to the atmosphere, then imagine a still image of it.

I dont think you have a problem with the 750 the 3400 due to its place in the market is designed to give you an acceptable image with low or no input from you,the 750 is a pro tool which could need its settings tweaking by you to give the results you want.
