What lens do you suggest?

Posted by ChristineKemokai, 03 October 2013 · 1,020 views

Like I said, I don’t own a camera yet. But, I want a D600. Most of my photography will be of my children, 2 young boys who never stop moving. There will be both indoors and out-door shots. What lens or lenses would you say is best?

How much money do you want to spend?  The 24-85mm kit lens will probably be a good start.  Or a Tamron 28-75/2.8, used.

If you want to spend the big money Sigma 35/1.4 and Nikon 85/1.8G.

Regardless, you should buy the Nikon D 50/1.8.  It's a must have for full frame shooters.

Yes, agree > the 24-85 has some good reviews - it's pretty versatile and sounds like a well-performing lens for the money

and yes  >  a 50 f1.8 is a great idea for indoors if you want to avoid using flash. Personally I find my D series one can get some ghosts/flares in both natural -but especially in artifical- light, so would consider paying a bit more for the new G series 50/1.8 which has some pretty darn good reviews e.g. a very positive review by Nasim Mansurov  >   Nikon 50mm f/1.8G Review

In my opinion, both Kenafein and Donpriz make good suggestions. But with your comment about having 2 young boys that are constantly on the move both indoor and out. I would suggest the 18 - 200 zoom. This way you won't have to change back-n-forth between lenses and possibly miss the shot you want. Also, you might want to invest in a strong flash.Just a suggestion.

Thanks to everyone! Your suggestions have been helpful and gave me some good homework to do for myself. Is there any brand lens that you would recommend over another or recommend that I say away from altogether? I want to make sure that the lens has a good autofocus response and I like the idea of vibration reduction, but is it worth it?
