This was my lens of choice to upgrade to after breaking my 18-55mm nikkor kit lens. (If it broke, don't fix, improve) Very good optical quality and build quality, It does on occasion auto-zoom to infinity and back. Still a very good Lens which I very happy with.
I bought this lens as an alternative to the D7000 kit lens because I wanted a bit more coverage on the wide end. And, I have to say that I'm pleased with it dispite the additional cost.
Focus is fast and sure as well as being virtually silent. Close focusing distance is good enough so that it makes a decent near macro lens and image quality is very good even at both ends of the zoom range. It's not great for low light photography due to it's slow f3.5~5.6 aperature range but in decent light it's a very good performer.
It has become my walk around lens and stays on the camera just about all the time.
I found a couple of errors in the specifications. First of all, the price is way too high. B&H is currently selling them for $629US. And the NikonUSA site lists them for $699.95US. Not chump change for sure but a lot better than the price quoted in the specs.
The second thing is that the specs above say that it doesn't have internal focusing. This is incorrect. It is indeed and IF lens.
