The Maypole

This picture was taken during a guided walk along Maplin Sands on the coastline of Foulness Island. Reputed to be the most dangerous walk in the UK and known as the 'Broomway'. In ancient times the route was marked by sticks or brooms to guide the traveller at low tide.

We were fortunate enough to have the low tide coincide with this wondrous sunrise to light up an otherwise drab vista. 'The Maypole' is marker at the entrance to Havengore made from a post with horizontal pieces of wood nailed to it and resembles the mast of a sunken ship.
