I'll blog this as well as not everybody read the photosharing threads.

I went to a concert last night.
The first band call themselves The Royal Mojos and play quite traditional blues.

The second band was The Full Nine Yards. They were difficult to shoot because their hard rock covers drive the audience to dance. Unfortunately, I didn't have an UWA with me.

Fantastic set, Peter. You really captured some great moments and motion. I've never shot a concert before and imagine it wouldn't be the easiest thing to do because of low light, constant motion, changing light, etc. You didn't mention what you were shooting with!

I used the D700 and a Tamron 28-75/2.8 for half the shots. The others are with the 105/2 DC. The first 5 are shot with the 105 wide open and DC @2.8R, the last 5 of the Royal Mojos series are the 105 wide open again with the DC in neutral. I was mostly at 1/40 and whatever ISO gave the correct exposure wide open.

When shooting a small club gig like this, buying the sound/light technician a beverage of his/her choice pays off as you can check the lighting sheet, run through the white lighting at the different levels for different songs and shoot a grey card for each level during the set-up and soundcheck. These are a tremendous help during post as I can run batches at different white balance according to the basic light. LEDs vary much more in colour temp depending on output level than the old stage cans did, but they are much better in all other aspects.

Very nice stuff. I particularly like the shots with the 105 like the first one. What ASA/ISO/"film" Speed were you working with?

Most are ISO ~1000-2000 with one or two up at 3500. The shots of the lead singer are ISO 250-400 as he was better lit than the others.

Nice stuff Peter...many years ago I had lots of fun and spent many rolls of film shooting musicians in small clubs - and occasionally big concerts.  Lots of similarities shooting live music performers and sports...
