Are some professional photographers...jerks?

Posted by JoyN87, 19 October 2013 · 1,349 views

I'm hoping if I become a professional photographer (or a Pro-Amateur Photographer), I will not act as a jerk to a novice photographer to anyone who are trying to learn to use the camera. Many times I see some photographers who are preparing for a project, I see cockiness and arrogance in their face acting like they are on top of the world. They even show off their camera (or too many unnecessary cameras to hold). I could write tons of examples I've seen these kind of people, but I can't because it will be too long to write. Some photographers are nice, generous, and really professional to people. A few months ago, I was attending college for a different course, a photographer came into the lab (it's a biology course) to take a shot with the teacher and bunch of students gather along to take the photo of the chunk of the chopped tree. She, the photographer, was really nice and was not a jerk to the students. It went great and it was posted on the local college newspaper, the front page.

I know people are disappointed I didn't write any examples of how rude some professional photographers are.Trust me, it's not worth it. Some photographers don't deserve that title "Professional," because they are not one.

Please reply, tell me your experience with these "professionals."

You get this sort of behaviour in all walks of life and every profession - its human nature I'm afraid !

I have had wonderful experiences with the various pro photographers I've met, but I am sure there are some rude photographers.  As Erewego said, you find rude people in every profession.  Again, just the same as other professions, the attitude (good or bad) that you see from a photographer is the result of many things surrounding that period of time.

Most photographers that people see are photojournalists.  If you think about it, photojournalists are much more visible when they are doing their job than other professions.  That can definitely lead towards what might be perceived as the photographer being rude.  As an example, the majority of people attending a major sporting event are there to enjoy themselves.  The photographer is actually working and may just be concentrating on doing his or her job rather than really being rude.  A doctor might react the same way if you were to interrupt an examination.

Not sure what you mean by showing off their cameras.  If you mean having more than one camera on them at a time, that isn't unusual.  I have seen several who will run with two or three bodies and three or four lenses in situation where it is more practical to have them available.  Better to have the gear and not need it than to miss the shot.

In general though, if you catch them when they aren't in the middle of something and have a friendly aproach, they're usually more than willing to chat, but remember if you see a working photographer, they are working.

Our wedding photographers (husband and wife) were fantastic and actually added to the day. They have been in the business for years and Tom even took time out with me to show me is lighting set up, the cameras and all the other bits of equipment he would be using during the day.

However I have had dealings with Pro's who think that they are way above even talking to anyone unless they are a pro themselves.

You do indeed get them in every walk of life.

I work in the word of bicycle racing.  The professional photographers that work in this field are quite personable, not rude and more than willing to share their expertise.  But, they are there to do a job, whether freelancing or working for a magazine, newspaper, etc.  No shot, no pay.  However, there are also photographers at cycling races, mostly amateur, who somehow, get a press pass and think they are god's gift to the profession.  I think you have met this style of "professional" photographer.  Ignore them, seek out a real pro.  Yes, they do carry more than one camera.  It's just tools of the trade, not showing off.
