The 1st of many questions

Posted by Kellym, 12 May 2019 · 566 views

Sooo ... am going to Africa this summer for the Great Migration, and then trekking with the mountain gorillas. Bringing two bodies (D700 & D750 - almost considering bringing along my old film FM for true B&W). My question: which lenses? Partial list of what I own (all Nikkor AF-S ED VR): 70-200 f/2.8; 70-300 f/4.5-5.6; 24-70 f/2.8; 14-24 f/2.8. I’m going to Morocco first and really don’t want to haul 50lbs of camera equipment. Plus, I’m really intrigued by the idea of also bringing the FM for B&W film pics in Morocco. Open to ideas, suggestions.

Hi Kellym,

I think you will get more responses if you post in the forums rather than in your blog.  That said, the only real "duplication" is the 70-200 / 70-300 range.  Personally I would take the 70-200 and perhaps look at selling the 70-300 to look at a longer prime or zoom - maybe the 200-500 would be something to consider.

Were I going on a trip as you describe, I think I could put up with some extra weight to be sure I was prepared for any photo opportunity that came about while I was on the trip.  Again, just my opinion, but I'd leave the FM and bring as many lenses and cards as I could.

Enjoy your trip and hopefully you will stick around here to learn and help others.  Even if you choose not to, please come back to post some images

I would definitely bring the whole trinity along, maybe with a TC-17 E II for more reach to save some mass compared to a longer tele. As all your lenses are G-type, I would leave the FM at home and maybe bring a 35Ti, a Minox GT, Pentax Espio Mini or an old Konica Hexar for some analog street shots in Morocco. An FM or FE with a 35 and maybe a lens or two more are nice, but the mass adds up and a compact rangefinder or AF camera is much more discreet in use.
