Far too much work to be healthy, but ...... back home and ready to experiment some more.
Toying with the idea of buying a new SD card:

SD Cards - Samsung, Sandisk & More | Ebuyer.com

Seems cheap enough that if it's no good, it's no great loss.
Will keep you posted on performance.....
