A Picture A Day

Posted by iNYONi, 10 June 2014 · 1,577 views

I Have a week off work so I've decided to see I can improve my photography over the week. I'll post my best picture from each day and see how I improve. The weather has been rather wet during my first day so I've had to improvise,

Well my week off didn't turn out as expected, I did however get a few days with my camera.

I've been wanting to improve my slow shutter speed shots for some time and really wanted to get some shots of waterfalls, rivers and maybe even try some cloud formations too.

I've only tried to "Slow" water down as it were a few times and these have never really turned out how I wanted. They always seemed to be way over exposed or just didn't seem to capture the look i was after.

I invested in a relatively cheap Hoya Pro ND8 filter (£28), this has given me some great shots, however I think I might have to upgrade and get a better filter system. Reason being is that the pictures were just "ok", they didnt have the waw factor. (as posted in the weekly best picture section).

I did learn though and that's also just as important as taking the pictures. For instance, trying different ISO settings against the exposure time, I took at least 5 shots at each location using different combinations of settings, I soon discovered that although having a high ISO setting gave good results, it also added a bit of noise to the photo. Alternatively, having a lower ISO setting and longer shutter speed gave the pictures a washed out over exposed look.

Now for my first real try at getting this type of shot I was quite pleased with myself...I do still think that having a darker filter would help improve this type of shot.

Anyway, rambling over. I'm now on the hunt for a decent filter system, And a better wide angle lens. I had provisionally reserved a Tamron 10-24mm Wide Angle but had to cancel due to personal circumstances. I may have to revisit this lens and finally make the purchase.
