Some big cats and dogs.....and a Zebra.

I have a love/hate relationship with zoos, i understand that they are a necessary evil and they play a major role in wildlife conservation but they are also really depressing.
Its sad to me to see these animals in their enclosures because no matter what, the inclosure is not big enough. The animals don't get to hunt for food, they don't really live the life they were meant to live. And its really humans fault.
I stood at the grizzly enclosure for about 15 minutes staring at this giant grizzly who looked absolutely miserable. I couldn't even take pictures of it.

Anyway, the Sumatran Tiger and Red Wolf shots were taken at the Point Defiance Zoo and the rest I took at the Woodland Park Zoo in north Seattle.

I have the same exact feelings about zoos…sigh… We have a polar bear at our zoo, and I think she is getting a bit neurotic. It's like she has OCD sometimes and can't stop a pattern of pacing and swimming.

Nice images though--I especially like the lion family.

That wolf at the end looks kind of sad...

I avoid zoos, I get depressed when I see the enclosures. I understand the necessity too, but I am sad that they are necessary...

That said, nice photos.

I agree.  The Grizzly enclosure just left me bummed. I regretted going, but I had friends in town and I was talked into it.

I went to the Phoenix Zoo two days ago.  I tried to take some photos of the Jaguar, but he/she looked so sad it was impossible to compose a photo worth of it's majesty.

As an aside note, while at the Zoo and at the Jaguar exhibit, a boy 10-12 years, had climbed the barrier leading up to the cage and stuck his finger into the cage where the Jaguar was sitting.  The cat snapped at him, the boy jumped back, scared, and his father pulled him over the barrier to safety.  This family of four thought it all so hillarious.  That boy could be missing a hand today.

I haven't been to a zoo in years.  My friend and I used to go to the National Zoo in Washington, DC about this time every year.  We would take all of our gear and shoot several rolls trying out things and having fun.  I agree with the thoughts on the zoos but I do miss the times we got to spend together doing something we enjoyed.  And we got some great pix over the years.  It is definitely a place where there are many photo opportunities and thus a great place to practice and get some familiarity with new gear.

Nice photos and thanks for the memories!
