Sometimes You Get Lucky.

Posted by Ignacior, 15 June 2014 · 1,264 views

Driving into along the side of Otay lake and I watched this hawk snatch a fish out of the water and land on a tree right next to me. Jumped out of the car and unpacked my gear as fast as I could.
Ive been in the habit of taking some test shots when I first get to a spot to make sure all my settings are the way I want them. For times just like this. Normally I would have the camera next to me but today after i tested it i put in the back.

These were taken with your D3100, correct?

With my 7100. I just recently upgraded.

Glad you were able to get it out in time to get these! Great work!

Ignacior please don't take this the wrong way, but I'd like to figure out why your photos aren't spectacular. The subject matter certainly is! I would expect the captures from your D7100 to be the same as mine, but at least on my monitor your photos are soft and dark. For comparison I direct you to the photos I posted in "Wild Florida on the Peace river". Would you please reply with what lens you are using? What were your camera's settings (EXIF). Did you do any post processing to your photos? Are the photos native, or were they cropped?

I dont have the particulars off the top of my head, but the subject was far enough that i was completely zoomed in on a 300mm nikkor lense. I did just recently get the camera so ive been somewhat exploring it. The pic was slightly resized to fit the site. And there is also the issue of me maybe not being very good at this whole thing. Personally, I dont much like photos that are too bright. I prefer slightly darker images and since im not a pro or selling my stuff i tend to use settings that turn out photos I enjoy and not so much everyone else.

Fair enough! Do you remember what mode were you shooting in? Do you keep VR on?

  • Report

I shoot  in manual mode. VR was off unfortunately.

That could explain it. Zoomed to 300mm it's tough to hold the camera still enough unless you have the shutter speed set to 1/800 or faster.
