This is a minute lens, the smallest Nikon AF-S lens I own, and it has become my constant companion, to my surprise, as I don't shoot that much macro.

When used on my Nikon 1 cameras it works like a fast shot tele (in 35mm terms it equals a 108mm macro lens), and it also works OK on my D600, if cropped to 16:9 afterwards (vignetting is otherwise a bit on the high side).

The only drawback with this tiny lens is that it lacks VR.

Its bigger brother the micro-NIKKOR 85 has VR, but it is also a much bigger lens, and a stop slower as well, and not quite as sharp as the 40.
