I have a P7800 that has a power zoom. Does anyone have experience of the lens hood system that is available for this camera? It looks a bit cumbersome and I not sure how it attaches. I would be happier having some first hand knowledge before investing in one. They are only £17, but if they are not much good, I would prefer not to waste the money.

Both the HN-CP17 and the HN-N103 that Peter mentioned appear to attach to the lens via the threads that lens filters attach to, and both look like they would work quite well. They shouldn't be very cumbersome to install or remove, in fact, they would probably be easier to install and remove than a lens filter just due to having more surface area to hold on to. (I invariably put fingerprints on my lens filters getting them on and off. LOL).
I am a big advocate for lens hoods. Aside from their function of keeping direct light from side angle hitting the front objective of your lens, they also serve to protect the lens and front objective from contacting other things and damaging the lens/front objective. I keep lens hoods on all of my lenses except my 10.5mm fisheye. I had take my 105mm Micro to the herpetology center at our local zoo, and the lens hood on that lens has kept me from bumping my lens into the glass trying to get a shot. I will bump the lens hood into the glass, but it saves me from hitting the forward objective on the glass. Lens hoods just make nice safety buffers/bumpers for your lenses.
I would recommend getting either of those hoods for your camera and trying one of them out. They aren't very expensive, relatively speaking.
