My FM2 has decided it doesnt want to work any longer. the film advance lever will no longer work. I took the bottom plate off and messed with the mechanical pars a while. I could then move the lever by holding the double exposure lever , but it still would not advance the film take up spool when I released the button. I can roll the take up spool by hand like when loading film. The lever will not move past  turning on the meter tho. I think some thing has jammed the gears on top. I am considering just replacing it with maybe an FA. It still bugs me that it quit, and I don't know why. I have an FE but it only goes up to 1000 shutter speed I miss the 4000 of the FM2.

My question is . Is there anything I need to pay special attention to when I remove the top plate?

I found this discussion on photo.net with a diagram from the repair manual.

Thanks Brian.  Now I need to decide if I want to try the repair my self and risk losing one of my favorite 35mm cameras or play it safe and send it out for the repair. decisions , decisions.

The FM2 is a classic manual camera that will increase in price. A few years ago you could get one used off eBay for $100. With the introduction of the FM3, the FM2 used prices started going up. A used FM2 averages $300 and costs more than the advanced electronic version, the FE2.

So I would recommend that you get a quote to get it repaired, especially if the cost comes out to $100 or less. I have both the original FM and a FE2, and the size of these cameras are perfect for street photography.

I had an FM2n and an FE2. I loved them! I wish Nikon had made a manual focus digital FM the way Leica has made a digital M...

The new Leica M10 is the same size as the Leica M3 of 1954.

I would like to see a Df-2 follow that trend.

For the OP: The Nikon FM, limited to 1/1000th top shutter speed, goes for a small fraction of the FM2. I picked up a good Black FM for $50.

I had a 1959 single-wind M3, for a couple of years, with a 1953  5cm Summicron collapsible and a 9cm Elmar. I loved it, but as an only camera it just wasn't versatile enough and I traded it for a Leica RE. Silly me!

I'd have a modern Leica digital M in an instant - if I could afford it and I will never be able to. I'd probably have an M-D just because...

I just picked up, off eBay, a mint+ FM2n. Only a couple of small scratches on the base plate. Looks like new, a 55 2.8 Nikkor also came with it. Cost $375.00
