My 2nd post on here. My 1st was when this site just started up and had a contest for signing up. No, I didn't win, hence why I haven't posted until now. I just received a refurb D750 after waiting for it a couple weeks for it to be delivered to me via UPS. One of the downsides to living in rural AK is UPS shipments take a while. Fedex shipping aren't any better either. My first lens, an 85 1.8G, that I ordered 6 days after ordering the D750 arrived during the weekend before the D750 and sat anxiously waiting for the body for it to attach to. Anyway, I'm still trying to get used of my new D750 85mm combo. Before acquiring the D750 I have been using my Pentax system since purchasing a K100D Super in 2008, then a K20D, K-5 and K-3 bodies with assorted lenses. I'm pretty stoked with my new system and I'm hoping you will help me on learning how to use it efficiently for indoor high school sports, my reason for choosing the D750.

I live in the small town of Maricopa, AZ, just 30 miles south of Phoenix, the 6th largest city on the US.  It takes an additional 1-2 days for my mail as compared to being in the city.  So, you may not be as rural as thought.  good luck with the D750, which I also own.  You will love it.

Welcome to the forums!

Don't feel too bad about delivery times. I live in the 4th largest city in Sweden and sometimes a letter or package takes 4 days or more to get the 45 miles from Stockholm. Packages from abroad usually get to the first sorting spot in 36-48 hours and then it takes 10 days or so to reach Uppsala.

The D750 is a nice choice and the 85/1.8G is sharp and has a nice transition from sharp to unsharp. You will probably find that the D750 retains much more DR at high ISO values than the K-3 did and that the AF is more reliable in low light.

To get the most out of the buffer in the D750, remember to switch Active D-lighting off as the ADL processing steals processor cycles. Unless you use Capture NX-D, ADL doesn't do anything except lowering the overall exposure anyway. You will have a steep learning curve ahead as you get to know what AF settings to use when but the experiments you do now will pay off quickly.

Nikons auto WB isn't quite as good as what you have been used to under floodlights. It comes close, but tends to be on the warm side compared to reality and the Pentax renditions. It is better to do a manual WB either from shooting a gray card before the game or dialing in a value if you have been at the venue before and kept a note of the settings.

Hi and welcome!

Think you'll find your D750 a champ for indoor sports. I did a lot of outdoor soccer at night with my D700 with a slower lens than yours.

How much you like your 85mm will depend on the types of shots you want, but you should no complaints about its technical performance.

I know several folks who use the D750 for both indoor and outdoor sports.  The 85 will definitely be a useful lens for indoor sports although you might end up wanting the flexibility of a 70-200 zoom at some point.  The 70-200 2.8 is the most common lens (along with the 24-70) that I see from Nikon and Canon users shooting sports.  It is surprising how quickly players get "small" at the other end of the gym, rink, etc.
