Since it does not appear that we have the ability to do polls, and I going to set this up in a poll format.  Forgive me if this has already been done.

I was wondering who the professional photographers are?

A.  Photography is my profession

B.  Photography is a part time job

C.  Photography is a hobby, I sometimes sell a few photos.

D.  Photography is a hobby, I have never sold any of my photos.

It used to be "A", nowadays "B". I found out that i do better photography work when I don't live it 70 hrs/week, so I work part time as a book binder and general dogsbody in the cataloguing department at the city library.

I'm a "c", it's a great hobby and along the way I've had some success and sold a few shots.

C

Don't sell (or take) as many as in the film days, but still trade a few for cash or favours.

I've even got an LCD screen exhibition in club/bar.

D here.

Thinking about a C though.

Maybe one day a B.

Never want to be an A. Too much work.

Solid D here. I do it mainly for my own enjoyment. Being that I am an eternal student, it is a never ending source of lessons and fascination for me. But if someone ever wanted to purchase one of my photographs, I would venture into the C camp.

C here with slight shades of "B"... C+?? LOL

Sold a few and have a business relationship with a few high end car dealers but it's not steady and nothing that would let me quit my day-job.

Like AfterImage, I'd put myself somewhere between B and C. In reality, my current photography varies between B, C, and D.  Right now I have some assignments that I can count on, but most of what I do relies on people deciding to purchase my photos.  But, the photography I do for college baseball is really for the kids and my family since my son plays.  While people can purchase the photos from my site, those are priced so I don't profit from them.  The college uses some of the photos for their web site so in a sense I profit from the exposure, but I'm not charging for the photos.  I do charge for the others, but I'm mainly trying to improve my skills so I can turn it into a part time job at some point down the road...maybe even full time for a few years if the right job happened to fall in my lap :)  But I will always be in D as well, shooting things I enjoy because I enjoy doing it!

I'm a D first and foremost, however, if C came knocking on my door, I wouldn't turn it away, but I have no intention of going looking for C......

I am very much 'D' camp, too, but I hope to get a job as a photojournalist, one day, at least!

I guess I have to now say I'm a B with shades of C and D...A local newspaper hired me last week to do some freelance work for them and they were happy with the results, so I'm hoping I'll have the opportunity to shoot for them again in the future.  It worked out great since they wanted someone to shoot the Conference Championship game that I was planning to shoot anyway!  They only used one (not the one I would have chosen) photo in the print edition, but included nine in their online story.
