8-Week Still Life Workshop

Posted by nbanjogal, 07 February 2017 · 2,181 views

I recently completed an 8-week Still Life Photography workshop from Don Giannatti, one of my favorite teachers. Still life has always been difficult for me, so I appreciated having to focus on it intently. We spent eight weeks trying out different perspectives and lighting techniques with various subjects to highlight texture, dimension, and so forth.

It was a good experience, and I learned quite a bit...I also learned that I could still use much more instruction and practice on composition in still life images. The class was challenging in a good way. It was challenging to find subjects to photograph (seriously--I'm sure I overthought it every time). And it was challenging to find the time to complete each week's assignment--I don't have much time to devote to photography these days. I managed (some weeks only just barely).

Here are some of the images I came away from the workshop with (those of you participate in the "Your Best Photo" threads will already have seen these--sorry for the repeat!):

Anyway, glad I could squeeze this class in. I'm already planning a few unassigned still life images...

If any of you ever have the time, these 8-week courses in still life and portraiture are fantastic and surprisingly inexpensive. I highly recommend them!

Well, lunch break is over. Must get back to work!

Very nice...love the white on white, you got some great detail in there.

Thanks! A few strategically placed black and white cards really helped keep some edges and detail. Just for the heck of it, BTS here: http://nicolefernley...h-toilet-paper/

I see some quite tasteful compositions in here, very cool!
Specially these:

  • Still Life with Toilet Paper
  • Still Life with Wheat Grinder and
  • Still Life with Keys

Thanks! I have come to really dislike the wheat grinder image, so it's always interesting to hear that someone else likes it. And I found out months later that it wasn't actually a wheat grinder (though my mother-in-law insisted that it was)--it was a meat grinder. :D But thanks for the comment!
